State Fair Food Substitutions Vol. 1

In light of the State Fair not happening this year, I visited three different places for fair-inspired food. First up for appetizers there’s the Okie Twinkies from Eddie’s in Edmond, then a turkey leg where the meat slides off the bone from Big O’s Pork and Dreams in Emond, and I end the video with dessert from Contrabandz Ice Cream Lab.

My goal was to have five different places for this collection, but schedules didn’t work out, so I still hope you enjoy this episode! I was hoping to including Philly Home Flaming Hot Cheetos Philly, Mighty Corn Dog, and The Catfish Bayou. I also had a friend comment on the video that FireLake Fry Bread Taco in Shawnee makes the best, best, best Indian tacos.

Eerie Edmond

After receiving a concerning voicemail from Detective James, Geoff and Sam meet up to learn some grave news. Then the two visit Edmond with Marnie Vinge of the Eerie Okie podcast who takes them to Silver Leaf Gems where they are introduced to Stephanie Carel for ghost stories about Edmond.

Tales Unveiled is a production of The Show Starts Now Studios and is produced by me, Dennis Spielman. The voice of Sam Saxton is Dennis Spielman. The voice of Professor Geoff DeRoot is Jeff Provine.

We would like to thank our guests for sharing their stories with us: Marnie Vinge of Eerie Okie; and Stephanie Carel.

This episode also featured the voice talents of Kristy Boone as Detective Valerie James.

Also a special thanks to Commonplace Books in Oklahoma City for hosting the detective meeting scene and Cafe Evoke for the Eerie Okie meeting.

Black-Owned BBQ Restaurants

I collaborated with Apollo Woods of OKC Black Eats on an episode about Black-Owned BBQ Restaurants for Juneteenth. We visited the traditional BBQ joint, George’s Happy Hog Bar-B-Q, in Oklahoma City then a more modern take with Big O’s Pork & Dreams in Edmond.

Apollo originally had three places planned for the video, however, one of the third choices the owner wasn’t feeling well that day and then another back-up had been vandalized. Still, with just the two places we did visit, the episode works well with the contrast of styles between the restaurants.

Shout out to Apollo for doing a great job! Be sure to check out his upcoming event, the 2nd Annual Black Foodie Summit.

Burger Punk

Creative Burgers Volume 1

I visited four different burger joints with guest host Justin Coleman. In this Uncovering Oklahoma episode, we visit the food truck, Burger Punk, then Patty Wagon in Oklahoma City, MOB Grill in Bethany, and end at The Fixx in Edmond.

Justin and I filmed this episode on Monday. We made several pivots on this video from the original plan. A few days before filming, one of the locations we had planned to visit told me that they were going to be out of town that day, but I was able to replace them with MOB Grill. Justin was going to be joined by Undrell Maholmes as co-host, however, Undrell got surprised with a camping trip and ended up not making it back in time on Monday to film. There were some other minor pivots we made along the way, but we got it done!

If this video does well, I do have plans for a volume two. I had received a dozen suggestions of burger places to feature when I asked people on social media for creative burgers in the area. We’ll get Undrell to join us next time. Maybe for volume three, we’ll visit Tulsa?

This was a rather large episode, but I was able to trim out some of the time Justin spent eating the food to keep it on pace. I’m planning to do more collaborative themed videos and I’ve already reached out to some people to get the ball rolling.

That’s all for today! I’ve been hired to film deadCenter this year, so that will keep me busy this weekend. Jeff Provine and I are in pre-production for season two of Tales Unveiled, which we’re looking at recording the first episode next week if all goes well.

Bricktown Brewery Chats and Snacks in Edmond

In this Chats and Snacks segment of Uncovering Oklahoma, I had lunch with the President and CEO of Bricktown Brewery, Buck Warfield. At the new location in Edmond, we discussed and sampled the new Twisted Comfort Food menu items.

I’ve retooled the Chats and Snacks segment as a way for more established local restaurants to share what’s new with them. This is my first video filmed using two Pansonic GH-5 cameras! In the past Chats and Snacks, I’ve had one GH4 and one GH5 and so I would have to spend some time color matching and clip joining, but with two of the same cameras, it saved me time and it looks amazing.
