First Americans Museum, The Flower Shop Winery, Sizzle N Spice – September 2021 Episode of Uncovering Oklahoma

In the September episode of Uncovering Oklahoma, we start with a preview tour of the First Americans Museum in Oklahoma City, which we got to see before the museum opened to the public. Then I traveled to Yukon to visit The Flower Ship Winery, a winery that’s also a pizzeria along Route 66. Finally, I visited the Halal Pakistani Restaurant, Sizzle N Spice Kebab Grill in Oklahoma City.

I edited this episode differently, mixing tours with the interview. Early feedback has been positive, saying the editing style made the video more dynamic. I’ll be sure to do this style again in the future when possible.

Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge Merch

For September’s design at my store, we travel to the Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge. Found in Oklahoma City, Stinchcomb Wildlife Refuge is a beautiful place for kayaking. You can rent a kayak at the Lake Overholser Boathouse to see for yourself. Head over to TeePublic to buy this as a t-shirt, hoodie, mug, sticker, and more!

Thank you to Janine De Guzman at Design Pickle for bringing this design to life based on my photos.

Rendezvous Pizza

The co-host from the OKC Foodcast series, Nabeel Jamal, guest hosts this segment about Rendezvous Pizza in Oklahoma City. Rendezvous Pizza is a counter service restaurant in Bricktown severing both Detroit and New York styles of pizza as well as wings, salads, and cold beer cheap. Nabeel interviews General Manager, Chris Dubois, about their pizza and samples some.

Be sure to watch my previous July story on Equity Brewing Co in Norman. Equity Brewing Co in Norman is more than a beer company. Suzette Grillot and Hannah Grillot describe their business as a values-oriented company as Oklahoma’s first woman-owned brewer.

Summer Treats, Fair-Weather Friend, Turkish Delight

With summer here, I traveled across the state, visiting four different businesses in this second volume of summer treats. I started in Norman with Beanstalk Coffee and Sno for their iced coffee, snowcone, and lemonade. By chance, I ran into Frios, selling popsicles (including popsicles for dogs) at the Wheeler Ferris Wheeler. Addi’s SugaShack in Norman showed me their banana pudding snowcone and funnel cake fries. I wanted to include something from the Tulsa area, and I found Rusty Gate Creamery in Jerks for ice cream and pineapple whip.

I spoke with Adrienne and Reed Jaskula, who recently opened up Fair-Weather Friend, about their beers and pizza for a different kind of treat. They described their beers as not having a style. By using different yeasts and hops, they keep the spirit of experimentation alive by utilizing numerous tanks. As for their wood-fired pizza, they use beer yeast to ferment their dough, giving it a unique flavor.

Sevim Cumpian from the Turkish Delight food truck shared her delightful food with me for my last story. Their best seller is the chicken tava, which features mushroom, green peppers, tomatoes, seasoning, chicken and pepper paste, and topped mozzarella cheese. They serve it with freshly baked bread and with rice and onion salad.

Uncovering Oklahoma May 2021

In this episode of Uncovering Oklahoma, I get a tour of Flora Bodega, a cooperative grocery store in the Paseo Arts District. Then I traveled to Norman to taste some authentic Chinese noodles at Magic Noodle. Next, I visited The BeetBox, a food truck that travels all over the state with a mission to change cattle country one vegan meal at a time. Finally, I saw the new Artful Inlet murals in Downtown Norman from the Norman Arts Council.
