Persistence of Vision

Persistence of Vision celebrates the emotions, sensations, and knowledge that remain after we close our eyes. The show at Verbode features the work of Fringe artists Mary James Ketch, Erica Bonavida, and Becky Arman.

Mary James Ketch’s paintings are dream-like distillations of everyday life. Her narrative work draws on childhood memories, family life, and the surrounding land. Her colors and lines are soft, inviting the viewer to be enfolded in their story.

Erica Bonavida paints large photorealistic images of fabric. Many of her subjects are vintage pieces with personal and family significance. As a result, her art reminds us of the moments of life bound up in the materials we touch.

Becky Arman explores color and form in her resin paintings. Her abstract pieces often call to mind water lapping the sand or stars in the night sky. They invite us to question our perception.

Fringe is a collective of professional women artists in Oklahoma working in a variety of media and styles. Fringe artists will donate a portion of all art sales from the show to The Homeless Alliance.

Verbode, a residential real estate brokerage, is located at 415 North Broadway, Suite 101 in Oklahoma City, in the TAP Architecture Building. Persistence of Vision runs from June 21 to August 23, 2018. Visitors can view the show Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm. The artists will give a talk on August 23 at 6 pm at Verbode. Deep Deuce Sessions

Deep Deuce Sessions is Oklahoma City’s monthly live music artwalk in Downtown OKC’s most historic music district. Walk, dine, drink, and listen your way across venues along 2nd and 3rd streets in the Deep Deuce District to experience hip-hop, singer-songwriter, jazz, rock, and pop artists showcased throughout the evening.

Held on every last Saturday of the month, you can find music at venues such as Urban Jonnies, Aloft Hotel, [Artspace] at Untitled, and outside the shipping containers next to Anchor Down, Bella Kitchen, and Wheeze The Juice.

All doors are open for free to the listening public.

This video was fun to make and I’m really proud of how well it turned out. Right off the bat, you’ll notice that this week’s video isn’t an interview, but a tour held by OkSession’s co-founder, Christian Pearson. To transition from venue to venue, I took a series of fun action photos of Christian and displayed them in different styles for each transition scene.

In a past video to show that the Deep Deuce District is more than apartments, I teamed up Localites OKC and Visit OKC on a pub crawl of the Deep Deuce District. In this crawl, we visited Urban Johnnies, Anchor Down, Aloft Hotel’s WXYZ Bar, Stag Lounge, and the Deep Deuce Grill. Not only did we learn about each place, but we got history lessons about cocktails and the district. Check it out if you want to know more about the district.

John Kerber at Startup Grind OKC

Startup Grind is a global startup community designed to educate, inspire, and connect entrepreneurs. Uncovering Oklahoma is happy to be a local supporter of the Oklahoma City chapter as I film their talks.

The latest session featured, John Kerber, the Co-founder of Who’s On My WiFi, a wireless monitoring and network analytics company that helps organizations make better business decisions. An active member of the startup community, John mentors startups in need of strategic direction and has led teams in past startups to incredible growth. You can watch the fireside chat in the video embedded above.

Katie Wilson Profile for Yes! Science!

Dr. Katie Wilson is a research scientist with the Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies at NOAA’s National Severe Storms Laboratory. After first visiting the United States in 2010 to complete an exchange program at the University of Oklahoma, Katie decided to leave her home country of England and return to the University of Oklahoma to pursue graduate school. Her research interests during both graduate school and now as a research scientist has focused on studying the impact of new weather data and technologies on forecasters’ decision making processes. She has enjoyed conducting interdisciplinary experiments with NOAA National Weather Service forecasters that combine knowledge and methods from meteorology, human factors, and social science disciplines to answer pressing research questions.

SoonerCon

SoonerCon is a nonprofit pop culture, science fiction, fantasy and educational convention that’s been happening in Oklahoma since 1983. Put on by The Future Society of Central Oklahoma, SoonerCon is a collaborative, volunteer-organized effort that brings together fans, creative and academic professionals, artists, authors, musicians, small and large businesses and community members each June in the Oklahoma City metro. The convention draws more than 2,000 attendees and participants. Additionally, charitable giving is a central focus of the convention’s community outreach endeavors, with these contributions from members growing year after year.

SoonerCon is Oklahoma’s premier pop culture, fantasy, sci-fi, gaming, cosplay, and anime convention. This year’s event runs June 22 – 24 at the Reed Conference Center in Midwest City.

I’m really happy with how well this promo spot turned out. I’ll technically be able to use it again next year, however, I’ve learned that they’re moving to a new location where they’ll double in size. I’m so excited for them! It has felt like they’ve outgrown the space at the Reed Conference Center.

This is the fifth video I’ve published this week! I’ve been editing footage the past three days, which has worked out fine since my car was in the shop. My father-in-law found a great deal on a used transmission for my car and so I had our mechanic put it in. In general, I’ve been having great luck at scrapyards lately. Found a new interior door handle and a display dashboard. The car’s been driving like new! How does this relate to my videos? I’ll feel more comfortable going on long drives, which means I’ll try to work on some stories in the Tulsa area.
