Claudia Cisneros: La casa que nos inventamos

From the La casa que nos inventamos exhibition at Oklahoma Contemary, this interview features artist Claudia Cisneros, whose Economía del lenguaje is on view in Oklahoma Contemporary’s Creative Lounge.

In Cruz roja, artist Claudia Cisneros explored language and meaning using objects connected to the culture of Guadalajara. The performance played out as a game in which women moved and transformed elements of Cisneros’ installation in La casa que nos inventamos. The results meditated on the female body and productivity, as well as relationships between humans and information. Cisneros’ performance was featured twice during opening celebrations for La casa.

La casa que nos inventamos runs through Jan. 9, 2023. Admission is always free. More info at okcontemp.org.

Viviana Kuri: La casa que nos inventamos

Over the run of the exhibition, the gallery will share the conversations about La casa, Guadalajara, and cultivating creative communities. You’ll find them on their YouTube and their blog at okcontemp.org/NewLight. This interview features La casa curator Viviana Kuri, director and chief curator of the Museo de Arte de Zapopan (MAZ) in Guadalajara.

Nature's Course by John Newsom - photo by Dennis Spielman

Nature’s Course Learning Gallery with John Newsom

Painter John Newsom gives a tour of the learning gallery at Oklahoma Contemporary, which pairs with his exhibition, Nature’s Course, in the main gallery. I took a creative departure from the traditional artist statement by having John talk about his works through the learning gallery.

John Newsom: Nature’s Course at Oklahoma Contemporary is a mid-career retrospective, featuring 31 of his paintings from the last 20 years. Newsom is best known for his richly textured large-scale oil on canvas paintings of flora and fauna. Newsom’s work layers and combines elements of Abstract Expressionism, minimalist geometric shapes, and hyper-realistic representations of animals to create complex allegories of the natural world.

The exhibition runs from March 24 to August 15, 2022.
