Software Developer Autumn Loveless on Yes! Science!

Pallas the Library interviews Autumn Loveless, a software developer at amshot in this episode of Yes! Science! Pallas and Autumn also talk about making robots, 3D printing, and the book, “We Are Legion (We Are Bob)” by Dennis E. Taylor.

Autumn’s previous experience ranges from managing servers, to creating a project management website for computer science students, to supplementing development staff at several small and large companies. The common denominator in her job experience is designing creative solutions to problems. She likes to view each challenge as a puzzle, which, coincidentally, she also spent time designing while working at an escape room.

Autumn spends her free time competing in Ludum Dare, building robots, and creating smart gadgets, especially if they are eco-friendly or look like magic tricks (like her “floating” lightbulb creation, made with a magnet and a wireless charger). She also regularly serenades her wife and two cats on one of the many instruments she plays.

This is the last episode of season three of Yes! Science! There are plans for a fourth season in 2020, however, I’m looking at selling the series for distribution to take it to a whole new level.

Geologist & Teacher Lily Christman Peppers

Pallas the Librarian interviews Lily Christman Peppers, the Youth and School Program’s Coordinator at the Myriad Botanical Gardens. Lily also teaches Pallas how to make a terrarium and discuss the book, A Short History of Nearly Everything by Bill Bryson.

Lily Christman Peppers was born and raised in Cambridge, MA. She obtained her B.A. in Physics and Geology from the College of Wooster in Wooster, OH. After graduation in 2013, Lily began working as a geophysics researcher for the U.S. Geological Survey and Stanford University, studying electromagnetic data and its potential relation to earthquakes. She then came to work at the Myriad Botanical Gardens in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma to pursue her love of nature and science education. She teaches a variety of botany, biology, and environmental education classes to kids of all ages. Lily loves reading with her cat, Ivan, on her lap, cooking with her husband, Matt, and exploring the outdoors solo or with friends.

Meteorologist Elizabeth Smith

In this episode of Yes! Science! Pallas the Librarian interviews meteorologist, Elizabeth Smith. Pallas and Elizabeth also make a hot air balloon and discuss the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling.

Elizabeth Smith is a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Oklahoma Cooperative Institute for Mesoscale Meteorological Studies and the NOAA National Severe Storms Laboratory. She earned her Ph.D. in Meteorology in 2018 from the University of Oklahoma’s School of Meteorology. Her work focuses on the use of ground-based meteorological observation platforms to collect data in the lowest few thousand feet of the atmosphere, or the boundary layer. This information is important to our day-to-day weather and for understanding the development and lifecycle of severe weather. Before coming to OU, Elizabeth earned her BS in Meteorology at the California University of Pennsylvania, and she was born and raised in the beautiful hills of West Virginia.

Lee Fithian

Pallas the Librarian interviewed architect, Lee Fithian, on this episode of Yes! Science! Lee and Pallas also make soap powered boats and discuss the book, “The New Mathematics of Architecture” by Jane Burry and Mark Burry.

Lee Fithian is an Architect and Associate Professor at The University of Oklahoma. Lee’s research and teaching efforts focus on the application of biological and ecological models to architectural design. She is finishing her dissertation in Engineering which has led to a patented building facade system that removes air pollutants from urban streets. Lee builds connections through interdisciplinary research to enable buildings to conserve and regenerate air, water, and energy in urban and suburban environments. Each of the courses she teaches carries a strong focus on the technical development and integration of analytical visualizations in order to develop not only sustainable but beautiful buildings.

Lee has over 17 years of commercial and governmental architecture practice experience, including serving as former Director of Sustainable Design at the Benham Companies (now Leidos). Within the State of Oklahoma, she helped found the Oklahoma Sustainability Network and the State Chapter of the US Green Building Council. Lee currently serves on the Committee on the Environment for the American Institute of Architects.

Alyssa Grooms

Pallas the Librarian interviews intellectual property attorney, Alyssa Grooms. Pallas and Alyssa also make blobs in a bottle and discuss the book, “The Happiness Advantage” by Shawn Achor.

Alyssa Grooms is an intellectual property attorney at Dunlap Codding. She focuses her practice on patent drafting and prosecution, licensing, prior art searches, and patentability analysis; as well as licensing and other IP-related transactions.

Alyssa Grooms was born and raised in the southwest Chicago suburbs. Alyssa attended college at Northwestern University and the University of Illinois, where she studied Chemistry and Chemical Engineering. During undergrad, Alyssa gained valuable work experience through Chemical Engineering intern positions at Citgo Petroleum Corporation and Flint Hills Resources. Upon graduating and finding herself wanting to be closer to her parents (who had since moved out of Illinois) and farther from harsh winters, Alyssa made her way to Oklahoma City as a law student at Oklahoma City University School of Law. She graduated in the top 10% of her class and was involved in various school organizations, including serving as a Student Instructor and a member of Law Review.

Alyssa Grooms enjoys staying active in the Oklahoma City community through volunteering and participating in athletic leagues. Growing up in a family of college athletes, athletics have always been a huge part of Alyssa’s life. She also serves on the Board of Directors for IgniteOKC and is part of the United Way of Central Oklahoma Board Serve program, which connects business professionals with United Way partner agencies. Alyssa was also recently honored with a NextGen Under 30 award recognizing individuals who demonstrate talent, drive, and service to their communities.

In her spare time, you can find Alyssa working on her golf game with her husband, Keegan, or hiking with their two dogs, Claude and Carl.
