Weekly Recap Nov. 1st

The Last Closing Reception
Thursday, October 27th marked the last closing art reception for The Project Box. The Project Box has been one of my regularly featured galleries for my Artist Statement Minute series on Uncovering Oklahoma so I went there to say goodbye. I’ll miss working with them.

Norman Fall Fest
Friday morning started with the release of my new 10-minute documentary on the Paseo Arts District. After that was published, I worked on getting ready for the Norman Fall Fest. The event closed down Main Street in Downtown Norman make for a safe environment for trick-or-treating, performances, and activities with an emphasis on inflatables. I was invited to have a booth this year. My wife suggested doing bubbles and having a “boobubble” station because it would be simple, easy, and kids would love. She was right about everything.

I had a table set up where one of us would hand out the treats while there were two big buckets that either my friend Michael Roberts, Leslie or I would make giant bubbles, along with two small bubble making machines. People loved the bubbles. Everyone was taking pictures of Michael making big bubbles. For the event, I also supported and brought awareness to the Teal Pumpkin Project by giving out bubbles, stickers, and stamps instead of candy. We had several parents tell us how much they appreciated us giving out treats because of their child’s food allergies and that we were the only booth doing the Teal Pumpkin Project.

We all had fun at the Fall Fest. The event was packed. I didn’t get a chance to walk around and see whatever else was doing at the time, and consequently, I didn’t get to eat either. This was my first doing such an event and so I have notes for improvements for next time.

OU Homecoming
I went to my first sportsball homecoming festival on Saturday for the Oklahoma Sooners football. It was fun walking around OU and Campus Corner to see all the businesses and the collage celebrating homecoming, people tailgating, and the vendors. I loved the movie themed parade floats this year. Overall, it was kind of strange being there as I felt a bit like an outside looking inside a whole different culture.

Day of the Dead
Sunday, Leslie and I visited the Plaza District for their Day of the Dead celebration. I took pictures and video for Uncovering Oklahoma and District Up. I loved how this year the festival became more of a community event. For example, Pie Junkie, which is normally closed on Sundays, opened up because of the festival.

15 Second Horror Film Challenge
Four of the Quarter Minute stories were accepted into the 15 Second Horror Film Challenge! With 450 entries from hundreds of filmmakers worldwide who only had 15 seconds to be new voices of horror, the above video features all of Season 2’s entries. The 15 Second Horror Film Challenge is a not-for-profit international contest which celebrity judges rank Top 20, share their personal Top 5 picks, and award films in a variety of categories to be announced through November. The stories I submitted were Fall Ritual, Float Like A Bee, Un-Synced, and Last Days.

Halloween
For the Halloween tradition, friends and family would gather at Leah and John’s house to do a big shindig. We don’t simply just pass out candy but have interactive displays, games, and performances with every year revolving around a theme. This year’s theme was Ghostbusters and the story had the Ghostbusters parked in front of a haunted house they were investigating. Lessa and Jessi had a science show for kids. Leah would run around and capture ghosts and monsters. Jay was a trapped ghost. Everyone had a role. Leslie and I were dancing skeletons and I would also scare people. As with every year, it was a blast.

The Paseo Arts District

Home to a vibrant group of artists, the Paseo Arts District is flourished with art galleries, all within walking distance, and interwoven with restaurants and retail establishments. My new 10-minute documentary explores life in the Paseo, its history, and what makes it unique from the views of artists, board members, and gallery owners. Interviewed for this story was Amanda Bleakley, Betsy King, Charles Martin, Lisa Jean Allswede, Dustin Oswald, Amy Young, Trina Morrison, and Joy Reed Belt.

The video features local Oklahoma music with “Blue Fox Drive” by The So Help Me’s, “As You Are” by Jarvix, “My New Love” by Wicked Shimmies, and “Entity” by Speak, Memory. Also, there is closed caption support in English.

I’ve been working on this documentary for a couple of months and I hope you enjoy it!

The Search for the Tree with Hands - photo by Dennis Spielman
A brand new photo from my Self-Shot Series. The foggy weather this morning inspired me to make this today.

Deeper Artistic Meaning:
Searching for some mysteries will require us to look away from our cell phones.

Behind the Photo:
For this image, I took over a dozen photos, one for each hand, and not every photo ended up being used because of placement overlaps. I did manage to get 10 hands coming out from the tree.

Weekly Recap Oct 25

Everything is Fine
In honor of the spookiest time of the year, an exhibition of Curiosities took over MAINSITE Contemporary Art. On Friday, October 14th I viewed the dual exhibition that featured the fantastical work of AK Westerman and comic book-flavored pieces of Bombs Away Art. Each artist captured different aspects of the horror nostalgia, whimsical surrealism and darkly twisted sensibilities the season tends to inspire. While there, I did an Artist Statement Minute video with Dustin Oswald, which I released on the 17th.

Afterward, I ate a Philly cheesesteak from Phill Me Up and traveled to Newcastle for another interview.

I met Daniel and Terry Schuldt, the owners of the outdoor haunted attraction, Newcastle Nightmare. Daniel took me on tour of the trail while the sun was still out to get a feel for it. I then did the interview with them and when it got dark, I filmed their haunted trail and zombie hunt. There was a full moon that night and the sky were especially creepy looking. The Newcastle Nightmare video was released on the 20th.

Moonlark Mysteries
On Saturday the 15th, Leslie and I participated in the Moonlark Mysteries Scavenger Hunt. The hunt had us visiting Oklahoma City businesses, find hidden clues, and speak secret code phrases with employees, all the while solving riddles and puzzles. The scavenger hunt revolved around a short mystery written by Mr. McCoy about a man, Dale, searching for his son who was kidnapped by the evil Lord Moonlark. As you progress through the local businesses, you are immersed deeper in layers of mystery and suspicions as you discover more about the true nature of Lord Moonlark, his connection to OKC, and Dale’s career working on the secretive Serapis Project.

The game was free and could be started at whenever as the winner would be drawn at random from those that completed the challenge. While we didn’t win, we had a fun three hours running the city.

Art and Harry Potter
After family brunch, I went to the Legacy Parks Art Day event put on by the Norman Arts Council. It was a one-time event to bring attention to the new city park. I also picked up The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt for the PS4 and I’ve been enjoying it throughout the week.

Later in the afternoon, after hanging out with Leslie and Lessa at The Screen Door coffee shop, Lessa and I went to the Harry Potter Festival. I think the best way to describe what happened at the festival was the festival planned and budgeted for like 5,000 people and they got 20,000. While I didn’t do much other than walk around to take pictures, I’m looking forward to next year’s festival.

Space4Lease
On Monday, I met with the band, Space4Lease. They performed a song for me for Uncovering Oklahoma along with an interview. It’s scheduled to be released on November 10th, after their EP album is released.

Douglas of the National Weather Museum
Weather Museum
Interviewed Douglas Forsyth about the new National Weather Museum in Norman on Wednesday. After visiting the museum and someone makes small talk about the weather, you’ll have more to say. While the museum is on the small size, it’s packed with videos and educational facts to keep you busy.

Later that day, I went to the Paseo Arts District and reshot my interview with Amanda. I went out to make sure the interview looked and sounded perfect, including bringing a new portable light kit.

Frack Fest
Thursday night was the opening night of the underground multimedia festival, Frack Fest, in Oklahoma City. My documentary, District Up!, was shown that night. I was honored to have been selected to be one of the opening night movies. Frack Fest was the second film festival where my movie was screened. Thursday was the only night I attended and as you continue reading, you’ll find out why.

Tulsa Road Trip
Went on a bit of a family road trip to Tulsa with my wife and her sisters and their dad to see their grandma on Friday the 21st. Afterward, we visited the Tulsa Botanic Garden, the award-winning Butcher BBQ Stand, and POPS on Route 66. Leslie and I last visited the Tulsa Botanic Garden back in April when they were still working on their new children’s garden area and we wanted to see it finished. While I was there, I took a bunch of photos and so here are a few of my favorites.

All of us can highly recommend a visit to the Tulsa Botanic Garden. It’s a hidden gem.

Saturday Shindig
Saturday was another busy day. It started with a visit to Fowler VW in Norman to take pictures for Uncovering Oklahoma of their Saturday Shindig. They were celebrating their first year of their new location, which is pretty cool because of the local art it features. Read this article I wrote about their art opening last year if you want to know more about the art.

The view from the O Bar during the Midtown Walkabout - photo by Dennis Spielman
Midtown Walkabout
Later in the evening, Leslie and I went to the second Midtown Walktown in Oklahoma City. We visited the new businesses in the area and we learned of the rooftop bar at the Ambassador. The O Bar is on the seventh floor and features a view that speaks for itself.

Enter Through the Drink Shop
Our last activity for the night was an art exhibit. Enter Through the Drink Shop was a fake Banksy art show at the 51st Street Speakeasy held on Saturday night only. The Speakeasy has had some interesting one-night-only art shows in the past, including a Wes Anderson theme.

That’s my recap of the last week.

Newcastle Nightmare

Will you end up as another victim buried in Eternal Slumbers Cemetery or will you make it through the Widows Web, survive Camp Carnage, and travel through twists and turns at Newcastle Nightmare? Owners, Daniel and Terry Schuldt, talk to Uncovering Oklahoma about what you can except at their haunted attraction in Newcastle.

I enjoyed making this video on Newcastle Nightmare. There was a full moon that night and the sky were especially creepy looking, which I did what I could capture it.
