In my newest episode of Archiving Contemporary Art, I sat down with painter John Newsom about his mid-career retrospective at Oklahoma Contemporary. This was one of those interviews I saved for this new show, which I hadn’t intended on sitting on for so long. While versions of the media tour and learning gallery walkthrough can be found online, this is the only story with the sit-down interview. All three stories have been blended to capture John’s exhibition in this hour-long documentary.

Focused on the artist’s body of work from the turn of the century to the present, the exhibition presented large-scale paintings from multiple series alongside several more intimate works. The exhibition included the brand-new, 9 x 18 foot Nature’s Course and Homecoming, another new painting referencing Oklahoma. The exhibition of the Oklahoma-raised and New York-based artist ran from March 24 to Aug. 15, 2022.
