2×13 An Anomaly in Lexington

Sam and Geoff travel south to Lexington where they meet Glen McDonald, the owner of Anomalist Books. Glen shares stories about what people have encountered in his building as well as stories of bigfoot throughout Oklahoma. When Sam returns home, he makes a startling discovery.

Behind the Scenes Commentary

With me having the flu in real life, I did manage to set up this interview with Glen before I left to visit my family for Thanksgiving. It’s a shorter than average episode, but we got some quality stories and history about the town of Lexington.

To enhance the storytelling elements, I included various sound effects, like branches breaking as Glen talks about such sounds. I also experimented by adding textures to the background music.

This episode is the second to the last of the season, so there’s a reveal that will play into the season finale. Jeff and I have already recorded the last scene and we’re working on the interview, which will be a collaboration with other podcasters.

2×12 Enid’s Ghost Stories

Unbeknownst to Sam, Geoff has been researching other hauntings in Enid. The professor meets with Sam at the studio where he shares the stories he learned about a spirit that’s still trying to fix an elevator, an explosion sound that haunts a school, a boy trying to keep people away from a lake, and more.

2×11 Touring The Ghosts of OU

With Sam recovering from the flu, Geoff took the University of Oklahoma Ghost Tour and recalled the ghost stories to Sam. The tour included tales about Holmberg Hall, where a music professor is said to play in the night, footsteps on the glass-plated floors of the library decks, a little boy roller-skating through the third floor of Ellison Hall, and Mex the Dog still cheering for the football team.

Behind the Scenes Commentary (Spoilers)

Doing an episode about OU’s ghost stories has been a back-up plan for us. Since Jeff himself would be the person Sam and Geoff would interview, we’ve put the episode off. With some interviews falling through and with me getting hit with the flu last week, I decided to do this episode to keep our weekly schedule. I came up with the story plot device of having the professor go on the OU ghost tour and recall the stories to Sam, who missed the tour because he was sick. I also came up with an idea where we could “call Jeff” for additional questions, but we ended up not doing that.

One of the things I’ve noticed in this episode when reflecting back on our first season was how much more back and forth Sam and Geoff have with each other. This episode isn’t all Geoff talking but has Sam asking questions and making comments. I really like that element.

This episode only covers a few of the stories Jeff himself shares on the tour as well as a bonus story about Mex the Dog. Fun Fact: I did an episode about Jeff’s OU ghost tours on Uncovering Oklahoma years ago. The photo used to represent the episode was a still frame captured from that tour.

2×10 The Tombstone Tales of Enid

Under a full moon, Sam and Geoff arrive at the Enid Cemetery for the town’s annual Tombstone Tales event after receiving an invite from Visit Enid. The next day, the two meet Russ Frazee and Errol Wofford at Garfield Furniture to learn more about the town’s history and connection to John Wilkes Booth’s death there.

This episode of Tales Unveiled is brought to you by Visit Enid. No matter what you’re planning, Enid has plenty of fun things to do and lodging options ranging from popular chain hotels to historic bed and breakfast inns. Get suggestions on what to see, eat, and do at VisitEnid.org

Behind the Scenes Commentary (Spoilers)

I was invited by Visit Enid to spend a night in their town to do stories for both Uncovering Oklahoma and Tales Unveiled. This episode of Tales Unveiled was the main feature of the trip. Visit Enid provided dinner at Napoli’s Italian Restaurant (which was good by the way) and hotel stay at Country Inn & Suites (also nice).

The way Jeff and my schedule’s worked, we did the last Tombstone Tale on Saturday night for the season. As we commented in the cold open for the episode, we did have a full moon for the occasion. Since I didn’t have control over the tour, I had to be mobile and capture it from an audience perspective. I also switched from recording parts with my audio recorder and parts with my camera. In the episode, I featured three clips from the tour although I recorded more.

Visit Enid arranged the interview with Russ Frazee and Errol Wofford at Garfield Furniture that we did the next day. As discussed in the episode, what is now Garfield Furniture was the supposed place John Wilkes Booth died. After the interview, we got to see the recreated room where Booth stayed.

This was the first time I was invited by a tourism group to do stories about a city, so I hope I get to do more projects like this one.

A Spirit Tour of Tulsa

Sam and Geoff travel to see Teri French, founder of the Tulsa Spirit Tours, who has been sharing Tulsa’s colorful past with locals and visitors alike for over a decade. They meet at Foolish Things Coffee where Teri discusses the city’s history, including stories of the Tulsa Race Massacre, serial killers, and prohibition scandals.

Behind the Scenes Commentary (Spoilers)

Our original plan to feature Tulsa was to include it in connection with our Route 66 storyline. However, with logistics and schedules, we made Tulsa its own trip. On the way back home, Jeff and I did take Route 66 with the intent of hoping to get some stories on the way to Chandler from Tulsa. Since it was Sunday, the few towns we did pass through were closed and we had no luck. We may try again next season.

I did reach out to the Cave House and Gilcrease Museum for interviews, but I never heard back. I would love to go back for more personal stories about Tulsa, but Teri did give us a great overview of the city.
